The Regula Falsi method for numerical solution of a system of algebraic equ
ations containing a single equation and a single unknown is implemented wit
h an object-oriented methodology. The method is applied to the solution of
equations predicting atmospheric emissions from combustion point sources. T
wo physical approaches are taken in modeling the combustion phenomenon: a k
inetic approach and an equilibrium approach. Emissions from the kinetic app
roach are found to be significantly smaller than those from the equilibrium
approach, indicating marked potential for overall industrial emissions red
uction through improvements in the design of burners for boilers, incinerat
ors, and furnaces. The object-oriented methodology displays significant ben
efits in terms of modularity, code reuse, and future upgrades. (C) 1998 Pub
