Josephson tunneling has been demonstrated between YBCO and lead with the cu
rrent flowing along the c axis of YBCO. The tunneling current is surprising
ly large, and does not follow random statistics when experiments on twinned
samples are performed. This phenomenon is not understood. We present a mod
el based on the presence of a surface-enhanced s-wave component to the orde
r parameter which can produce these effects. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
