We consider the critical current as a function of the applied magnetic fiel
d for Josephson junctions. In paipticular we show that broken time reversal
symmetry in the short junction limit for general junctions and self-fields
in 0-pi junctions both give rise to an asymmetry in the critical current a
s the magnetic field is reversed. Varying the junction size can distinguish
between these two sources of asymmetry. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
