Calix[4]amidocrowns and calix[4]amidocryptands bridged at the wide rim

New macrobicyclic calix[4]amidocrowns (9-12) and macrotricyclic calix[4]ami docryptands (13, 14) have been obtained by reaction of a calix[4]arene deri vative containing two distal acid chloride groups at the wide rim (8) with appropriate diamines. Their ionophoric properties were checked in PVC membr anes. The calix[4]amidocrowns 10-12 did not alter significantly the selecti vity of the membranes towards different alkali metal and alkaline earth met al cations. The calix[4]amidocryptands 13 and 14, however, showed significa nt Li+ over Na+ selectivity, especially derivative 13 with the smaller 15-m embered diazacrown moiety.
