Abstract
An effective particle picture developed earlier for gap soliton propagation in piecewise uniform gratings is extended to treat gratings that vary grad ually. In particular, we consider gratings in which the strength or the Bra gg frequency varies linearly with position. We use this to analyze propagat ion in more complicated structures corresponding to localized grating defec ts, and gradual interfaces between two different gratings. [S1063-651X(98)0 7312-7].
