The inhibition of chaos in the damped, driven one-well Duffing oscillator b
y application of weak parametric excitations or small additional forcings i
s studied theoretically by means of Melnikov's analysis. It is demonstrated
that the "maximum survival" of the symmetries, under chaos-suppressing exc
itations, leads to the optimal values of the initial phase differences betw
een the primary chaos-inducing and chaos-suppressing excitations. (C) 1998
