Abstract
The study of desertification in China began in 1977 with the UN Conference on Desertification. Since then, much progress has been made. This article r eviews progress over the last five years in China. A brief description of d esertification research in China is given, and developments and changes in the definition of desertification described. Finally, the causes and patter ns of desertification are discussed.
