Thin (40-80 nm) layers of YSZ deposited on the surface of YBa2Cu3O7-delta f
ilms reliably protect the superconductor from atmospheric degradation. The
high rate of oxygen diffusion in the protective layer allows further oxidat
ion of the YBa2Cu3O7-delta. Processes accompanied by release of oxygen from
the YBa2Cu3O7-delta cause the protective properties of the coating to be l
ost. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7850(98)02512-9].
