Following a review of quality criteria for the design of a cathode insertio
n host for a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, comparisons are made between
layered and framework hosts having simple anion versus polyanion arrays. T
he electrochemical performance of the brannerite Li1+x VMoO6 is shown to su
pport a larger capacity (200 mAh/g), but a lower voltage (2.4 V vs lithium)
, than the NASICON system Li1+xFe2(SO4)(2)PO4 (80 mAh/g at 3.3 V) at a curr
ent density of 1 mA/cm(2).
