S. Giesa et al., Experiments towards an analytical application of host-guest complexes of [60]fullerene and its derivatives, EUR MASS SP, 4(3), 1998, pp. 189-196
Attempts to gain access to an indirect mass spectrometric characterization
of dimeric [60]fullerene derivatives such as C-119, C-120 and C120O have be
en made. By exploring the ability of different hosts to form host-guest com
plexes with [60]fullerene derivatives it was intended to obtain products wh
ich could be analyzed by fast-atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry. gam
ma-Cyclodextrin (CD) and several calixarenes have been tried as potential h
osts, but only CD was capable of forming the desired complexes in some case
s. Besides the well-known complex [2CD + C-60], prepared for testing purpos
es, me report, for the first time, the formation and FAB mass spectra of [2
CD + C60O] and [2CD + C60O2].
