Reaction of [PtCl2(SMe2)(2)] or K2PtCl4 with two equivalents of the water s
oluble phosphine ligand, 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA), afforded c
rystals of {cis-[PtCl2(PTA)(2)]}(2). H2O, of which the solid state structur
e was determined by X-ray crystallography. This study describes the first c
rystallographic study of a cis PTA complex of Pt(II). It crystallizes in th
e triclinic space group P (1) over bar with two crystallographically indepe
ndent Pt(II) moieties in the asymmetric unit which are linked by strong hyd
rogen bonds via a common water molecule. The title compound exhibits the sh
ortest Pt-P bonds (avg 2.2263(14) Angstrom) known to date. P-31 NMR shows t
hat in aqueous solution an equilibrium exists between the cis bis isomer an
d [PtCl3-n(PTA)(1+n)] (n = 2, 3) complexes. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
