A literature overview is presented of radiative and convective heat transfe
r in high temperature gas flows. The primary thrust is on fundamentals, but
current technological applications of the complex phenomena involving, not
only spectrally selective radiative transfer in common gases, but also tur
bulent chemically reacting flows, are discussed. The infrared radiation gas
property models and methods for solving the radiative transfer equation ar
e highlighted first. Then, convective and radiative heat transfer in channe
ls and chemically reacting high temperature hows are reviewed. The nonlinea
r effects of turbulent fluctuations in radiative transfer, and the influenc
e of radiation on thermal turbulence spectra are also considered. Critical
issues which need to be addressed for a more complete understanding of the
processes are raised, and topics requiring research attention are identifie
