Using a transversely polarized electron beam of 300 keV, an (e, 2e) experim
ent has been performed to measure the spin up-down asymmetry in the electro
n-impact ionization of the K-shells of copper, silver and gold. We found di
stinct spin asymmetries in the recoil region increasing with the nuclear ch
arge of the target. This is in good agreement with calculations in relativi
stic distorted-wave Born approximation.
