Four field investigations of long-range sound propagation have been underta
ken in Norway from 1994 to 1996. Extensive meteorological measurements have
been carried out as part of the trials. Propagation of low-frequency impul
se noise has been studied during summer and winter conditions at two locati
ons: Haslemoen; the short-range trials site and Finnskogen; the long-range
trials site, At these two sites, propagation out to 1.4 and 23 km was studi
ed, respectively. In the forest, meteorological parameters were sampled bot
h below and above treetops, and turbulent fluctuations of wind and temperat
ure were measured by a sonic anemometer and thermometer. In addition, a tet
hered balloon was used to measure variations of wind and air temperature in
the atmospheric boundary layer. (C) 1998 Institute of Noise Control Engine
