Abstract
The distribution of charges and the effective stopping charges of iodine io ns traversing a windowless hydrogen target has been measured using the Tand em accelerator facilities at Orsay. By varying the hydrogen gas in a large range (10(-2) to 120 Torr) it gives an unique opportunity to test stopping power theories for a given projectile charge state. A comparison is present ed here between our results and theoretical models. The connection between extended charge and non-linear effects is stressed out. (C) 1998 Elsevier S cience B.V.
