Since solid organ transplantation has become the treatment of choice for ma
ny end-stage organ diseases, it is now more likely that a primary care phys
ician will care for a transplant recipient in community practice. Routine f
ollow-up pediatric care within the context of transplantation, as well as s
upervision of the transplant team for transplant-related issues is essentia
l. This article focuses on fundamentals of medical management in pediatric
solid organ transplantation and how supervision by primary care physicians
can significantly impact the child's survival. Fundamentals related to medi
cal and psychosocial care issues of the pediatric liver, kidney, and heart
recipient are discussed.
