Abstract
The fringe pattern of two overlapping atomic Bose-Einstein condensates is c alculated in the presence of a vortex in one or both condensates. The vorte x leads to an edge dislocation in the fringe pattern, with the additional f ringe starting at the vortex core. Observation of this specific interferenc e pattern would constitute experimental evidence for the presence of a vort ex in an atomic condensate. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reser ved.
