The alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine particles were dispersed in the solutions of stea
ric acid/n-hexane/chloroform by the ultrasonic method, and fabricated by th
e Langmuir-Blodgett film technology. alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine particles/steari
c acid composite LB films were characterized by pi-A curve, UV-visible abso
rption spectrum. IR spectrum, small angle X-ray diffraction, TEM and electr
on diffraction. The results showed the following: the alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine
particles were uniformly dispersed in organic solvents; the film-forming c
haracterization of the alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine particles/stearic acid monolay
er was fine, the alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine particles in the composite film had
a small orientation: the alpha-Fe2O3 ultrafine particles/stearic acid compo
site film had a lamellar structure. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All
