The crystal structure of chloromenite, Cu9O2(SeO3)(4)Cl-6, a = 14.170(3) An
gstrom, b = 6.262(1) Angstrom, c = 12.999(3) Angstrom, beta = 113.05(1)degr
ees, V = 1061.3(4) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, space group 12/m, has been solved by
direct methods and refined to an R(F) index of 0.051 (wR(F-2) = 0.128). Th
e structure is based on unbranched zwieier single chains (uB, 1(infinity)(1
)) [O2Cu6] of corner sharing [OCu4] tetrahedra running parallel to the b ax
is. The geometry of structurally similar (uB, 1(infinity)(1)) [O2M6] (M = C
u, Zn) chains of oxocentered [OM4] tetrahedra (M = Cu, Zn) in inorganic com
pounds is discussed.
