Efficiencies of an SSNTD (solid state nuclear track detector) and an e
lectronic neutron dosemeter were studied under the same field of neutr
ons when an appropriate (n,alpha) (n,p) converter was used. Characteri
stics of each system related to neutron dosimetry were studied. CR-39
was used as the SSNTD. The same characteristics were examined when PIP
S (passivated implanted planar silicon) diodes were used as detectors.
Both dosimetric systems work with a high and continuous response from
thermal up to fast neutron energy range (14 MeV). The angular respons
e approaches isodirectional standards. The two systems show good linea
rity up to the 10 mSv doses which are used for calibration in the fram
e of Eurados joint irradiations. The lowest detectable dose is discuss
ed for both neutron dosemeters. This work presents results from on-pha
ntom irradiations. Comparing characteristics of the two detection meth
ods, the electronic system presents higher sensitivity and response fr
om the SSNTD although the whole behaviour of the two systems is very s
imilar.
