Numerical and experimental investigations were carried out in order to
test the possibility of rapidly distinguishing (alpha,n) from fission
neutron sources by means of superheated drop detectors (SDDs). This w
as achieved by measuring the ratio between the responses of two detect
ors operating at 30 degrees C: SDD-1000, which has a threshold at abou
t 0.5 MeV, and SDD-6000, which has a threshold near 4 MeV. The approac
h holds promise as it appears suitable for the development of compact
instrumentation for safeguards verification purposes.
