The sedimentation of monodisperse magnetic particles dispersed in water has
been studied by means of time-domain dielectric spectroscopy in the freque
ncy range 3 MHz to 3 GHz. The particle sizes were 2.8 and 4.5 mu m. We appl
ied a magnetic field to the particle suspensions and monitored the dielectr
ic response of the system. Suspensions in which the particle diameter was 2
.8 mu m have been studied in detail, varying both the volume fraction of th
e disperse phase and the external magnetic field. When a magnetic field is
applied linear aggregates are formed, thus influencing both the sedimentati
on rate and the structure of the sediments. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
