Solitary benign non-parasitic hepatic cysts (SBNHC) are rare congenital cys
tic abnormalities. Complications of SBNHC include infection, perforation, s
pontaneous haemorrhage, torsion and neoplastic degeneration. Squamous cell
carcinoma is an exceedingly rare entity, which usually arises from metaplas
tic and subsequent neoplastic transformation of pre-existing cyst of the li
ver. We report a new case of squamous cell carcinoma of the liver in a non-
parasitic solitary hepatic cyst infected by aerobic mixed flora at the time
of diagnosis. Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 10:1051-1053 (C) 1998 Lippincott
