Anodic oxidation of the spiro [4,9'-fluorenyl]-2,6-diphenylthiopyran a
t potential more anodic than 1.85 V (ref: Ag/0.1 M (Ag+, NO3-) in CH3C
N) leads to the coating of the anode by an insoluble electroactive mat
erial, which is described as a polyphenylene matrix substituted by thi
opyrylium or thiopyran functions depending on the oxidation state.
