The first structurally characterized example of a metal-metal bonded comple
x bridged by the DNA nucleobase adenine through the N1, N6 positions is rep
orted. The new dirhenium compound, Re-2(O2CCH2CH3)(2)(9-EtA)(2)Cl-2 . CH3CH
2O . C6H14, binds to adenine at the sites where thymine normally engages in
Watson-Crick base-pairing. Such chemistry, if it occurs in vivo, could pla
y a role in the carcinostatic activity of tetrapropionatodirhenium complexe
s that are known to inhibit DNA replication. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
