Water uptake of perfluorinated ionomer membranes (Nafion(R)) is studied by
small angles X-rays scattering (SAXS). The purpose is to determine if these
membranes are subjected to the Schroeder paradox. This paradox is defined
as a difference of water uptake for a membrane immersed in water or balance
d in presence of a satured vapor pressure. Results from SAXS measurements i
ndicate that the appearance of the paradox is dependent on the pretraitemen
t of the membrane because of its water uptake memory.
