The concept of regression in the service of the ego is linked to the c
omplementary notion of progression in the service of the ego. Both pro
cesses are described as cognitive-style components of creative thinkin
g. Interactions between the field dependence-independence and fixity-m
obility styles are discussed as are psychoanalytic, trait, physiologic
al, and developmental perspectives of style. Creative domain differenc
es and the personality and psychopathological characteristics of creat
ive thinkers are examined through the regression and progression mecha
nisms. The cognitive-styles approach offers a compelling and potential
ly fruitful framework for understanding creativity.
