The effect of hexachloroplatinic acid (HCPA) on the liquid crystalline phas
e boundaries of ternary systems containing a nonionic surfactant and water
was investigated. The temperature and composition ranges of the liquid crys
talline phases were affected dramatically by the presence of HCPA. In parti
cular it was found that the presence of the platinum compound enhanced sign
ificantly the stability of the more highly curved phases (I-1 micellar cubi
c and H-I phases).
