Abstract
India is one of the few countries in the world having the largest tribal co ncentration. The tribals of our country are having fascinating rich cultura l heritage and played a significant role in enrichment of composite culture . The objective and comparative studies of pre-literate societies and their contribution to great indigenous culture of India is essential before they are totally eclipsed in the fast changing cultural canvass of India. Such indepth, comparative and analytical studies may throw light and provide mis sing cultural links in understanding complex Indian heritage. Santal cultur e may provide certain clues for decoding the scripts on the seals of Indus Valley Civilization. The study of the process of indigenization of alien cu lture is essential in order to bring about harmonious integration of tribal societies. A national cultural policy of tribal communities is also necess ary to promote sustainable development, on the lines of their "own genius".
