Abstract
This paper investigates how students vary in their conception and engagemen t of the diagnostic process. The research question is whether it is possibl e to isolate appropriate sources of variation that are sufficiently psychom etrically and conceptually robust for modelling purposes. Eleven such sourc es of variation ale reported, together with an associated common-factor emp irical model that is readily interpretable in conceptual terms.
