Abstract
Collapse of quantized Hall resistance (QHR) - steep deviation of Hall resis tance from the quantized value - at high Hall electric fields has been obse rved in butterfly-type Hall bars made from GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Th e collapse is not caused by breakdown of quantum Hall effect (QHE) - abrupt increase in dissipation in the QHE stale. A phenomeno-logical model for th e collapse of the QHR and the breakdown of the QHE is discussed. (C) 1998 P ublished by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
