Linear kinetic modes in weakly collisional plasma

Experimental and theoretical evidence is reported for the existence of disc rete modes in the weakly collisional regime of electrostatic ion waves. The decay of time-harmonic perturbations of the ion velocity distribution func tion is found to be weaker than expected, and to have a different functiona l form from the classical theory.
