Gl. Strongin et al., ANALYSIS OF SIDE-EFFECTS DURING TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSION WITH ATENOLOL, VERAPAMIL AND ENALAPRIL IN OPERATOR PROFESSIONALS, Kardiologia, 37(1), 1997, pp. 31-36
The aim of the study was to determine feasibility of the use of verapa
mil and enalapril for systematic treatment of arterial hypertension in
professional operators. Atenolol, verapamil and enalapril were given
in different sequences to 41 men aged 32-55 years with uncomplicated a
rterial hypertension. Results of 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and
bicycle exercise tests were used for assessment of efficacy of treatm
ent. Subjective symptoms of intolerance were registered. Orthostatic s
tability and the state of specific operator psychological (cognitive)
abilities were evaluated by means of Cogscreen battery of tests includ
ing tests performed under conditions of hypoxic hypoxia corresponding
to the altitude of 3000 meters. Monotherapy was effective on the avera
ge in 77% of cases. Satisfactory blood pressure control (blood pressur
e level 145/94 mm Hg or less for at least 1 month) was not achieved in
10, 18 and 16% of patients during treatment with atenolol, verapamil
and enalapril, respectively. Individual intolerance occurred in 3, 7 a
nd 13% of patients, respectively. There were no cases of lowering of o
rthostatic stability or pronounced derangement of cognitive functions.
