Abstract
The aims of the project are to demonstrate the merit of alternative selecti on strategies in improving the profitability of South Australian Merino she ep, to establish an ongoing technology transfer program, and to develop ref inements genetic technology might require. Three demonstration flocks of 20 0 breeding ewes each have been established. A fourth, randomly selected flo ck is maintained as a Control. The demonstration flocks are: 1. Selection p redominantly driven by objective measurement and performance recording; 2. Selection predominantly driven by sheep classing, and 3. Selection using th e technological package of advocates of the approach commonly known as 'eli te wool' or 'soft rolling skin'. Selection and mating decisions are made by producer groups responsible for each selection flock. The value of the pro ject to industry is briefly discussed.
