B. Friberg et M. Ahlgren, Cavaterm (TM), endometrial ablation, results at 5 years follow-up, 7TH CONGRESS OF THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR GYNAECOLOGICAL ENDOSCOPY, 1998, pp. 31-34
Cavaterm(TM), a method for endometrial destruction by thermal coagulation,
is an established technique for the treatment of menorrhagia as an alternat
ive to hysterectomy. Since August 1993 we have treated more than 200 out-pa
tients on random cycle days and with no pre-treatment with GnRH-analogues.
All treatments were started with D&C to thin the endometrium down and obtai
n specimen for histopathological diagnosis. Duration of treatment is 15 min
utes. Treatment can be done under paracervical block. Treatment outcome fiv
e years after the first treatment shows a success rate of 94% when intracav
itary changes and submucousal leiomyomas are excluded. Thus, this outpatien
t treatment has a high success rate. We found the Cavaterm(TM) device safe
for the patient and easy to learn for the physician.
