Abstract
In this open, prospective study including 458 patients, we compared the dia gnostic abilities of transvaginal sonography (TVS) and saline infusion hyst erosonography (SIS) in the diagnosis of uterine lesions. Failure to perform SIS (10% of the cases) was usually related to cervical stenosis. No compli cations were noted after SIS. Normal uterine morphology determined by TVS e xamination (n = 234) was confirmed in 189 patients, whereas endometrial pol yps were diagnosed in 45 patients (20%). All focal lesions detected by TVS (n = 63) were confirmed to be endometrial polyps by SIS examination. Myomas characterized as intramyometrial by TVS (n = 105) were demonstrated to be submucous in 32 cases by SIS (30%). Diagnosis of submucous myoma by TVS (n = 63) xas confirmed by SIS in 62 cases (99 %), and one was characterized as intramyometrial by SIS. Compared to TVS. SIS achieves better morphologic v isualization of the uterine cavity.
