Selective mutism is an infrequent phenomenon, often first identified i
n the school setting. This article presents the historical background
for the treatment of selective mutism and current diagnostic symptoms
oi selective mutism, and then elaborates with a case study illustratin
g successful multidisciplinary treatment outcomes of a child who was s
electively mute. Issues relevant to speech-language pathologists worki
ng with elementary school children are discussed, and treatment guidel
ines are provided.
