Secretion of progesterone (P-4) estradiol (E(4)) and androgen (A) by f
ollicular (FC) and interstitial (IC) cells isolated from carp ovaries
at prespawning (April) and resting time (December) was investigated. C
ells were cultured as separate monolayers. FC secreted more P-4 and E(
2) than corresponding IC. At the time of diapause there was no signifi
cant difference in P-4 and E(2) secretion by both FC and IC. However,
secretion of A, which declined in cultures of FC, had an increasing te
ndency in cultures of IC. It seems that interstitial tissue is the mai
n source of androgen in the carp ovary. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Inc.
