This article discusses the problem of how to express the horror of war in s
uch a way as to convey the reality of the experience without distorting the
material through over-violent emotion. It considers the work of several wo
men writers of fiction and journalists from the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia,
Croatia and Serbia), who responded in different ways to their impulse to be
ar witness to the events around them. The works discussed were all written
during the war itself.
