An evaluation is presented of the gas dynamic trap (GDT) mirror machine as
intense neutron source for fusion material test irradiations. This includes
an assessment of the neutronics characteristics of the GDT as compared to
future fusion reactor systems (ITER, Demo) and the IFMIF neutron source as
well as a detailed design of a helium-cooled test assembly elaborated for t
he largest of the two material test zones taking proper account of neutroni
cs, thermal-hydraulic and mechanical aspects.
