A field experiment conducted at Ujjain in winter(rabi) season of 1990-91 an
d 1991-92 showed that grain and straw yields of gram or chickpea (Cicer ari
etinum L.) were significantly higher with 50,000 plants/ha, whereas number
of pods/plant, grains/pod and 1,000-seed weight were significantly lower wi
th 50,000 plants/ha. Yield and yield attributes were significantly higher w
hen crop was planted on 20 October. Variety 'J4 315' gave significantly hig
her grain yield during both the years.
