An experimental investigation of the temporal dynamics of a diode laser sub
ject to optical feedback from an external cavity containing a cell filled w
ith cesium vapor has been performed. Peculiar dynamic regimes, such as self
-pulsing, low-dimensional, and high-dimensional chaos, characterized by a n
ew time scale, much longer than the time scales of all instabilities taking
place in diode lasers under standard feedback conditions, have been identi
fied.
