The interaction of 10(-5) and 10(-4) M 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) with C
dS(<10(1)over bar 0>) surfaces was investigated using SXPS, S L-2,L-3, C K
and N K XANES spectra excited with synchrotron radiation. The interface rea
ction is photochemically activated and needs thermal activation. A proposed
reaction model includes separated electron-hole pairs as band-gap states.
At the surface, chemisorbed MBT and an overlayer of bis-(2-benzothiazolyl)d
isulphide (BBTD) were detected. Angular-dependent C K XANES measurements of
the adsorbate complex indicate a tilted orientation of the molecular plane
s of the adsorbed MBT molecules. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
