In this paper, local deformation and buckling of a cylindrical Al tube unde
r impulsive pressure is discussed. To give a local shock load, five kinds o
f mandrels were inserted into the tube. The mandrel has an axial length of
50 mm and a V-shaped groove in the axial direction of the groove angle of 4
5, 90, 120, 150 and 180 degrees. The tube was freely deformed into the groo
ve by applying external magnetic pressure produced by an electromagnetic fo
rming device. The condenser capacity of the electromagnetic forming device
had a constant value of 400 mu F and the discharging energy of the device,
which was the origin of the shock load acting on the cylindrical tube, was
controlled by the charging voltage of the condenser. The deformation proces
s was recorded by a high-speed camera and the deformation behavior was anal
yzed using the finite-element method. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Ail ri
