Energy levels of neutral francium are investigated in the Ritz formalism al
ong the Rydberg series up to n = 30. Transition probabilities are calculate
d for the s-p and pd transitions. Core-polarization effects are included in
the model adopted. The validity of the approach has been tested by compari
son with the laser lifetime measurements available for the 7p(1/2) and 7p(3
/2) states of Fr I and with the accurate data published for the Rb I and Cs
I atoms.
