Cj. Hodgson et Rc. Henderson, A new genus with two new species of soft scale insect (Hemiptera : Coccoidea : Coccidae) from New Zealand, J RS NZ, 28(4), 1998, pp. 605-639
A soft scale genus, Pounamococcus Henderson & Hodgson, new genus, is introd
uced to take two new species, P. tubulus Henderson & Hodgson and P. cuneatu
s Henderson & Hodgson, from New Zealand. The adult males and females, Ist-i
nstar nymphs and 2nd-instar male, and female nymphs and pupae of both speci
es are described. Some details with regard to habit and distribution are al
so included. All known stages except the pupae of both species have campani
form pores on the tarsus of all legs, a feature so far unique within the fa
mily Coccidae, but a common feature in most other families of Coccoidea; th
is character is considered to be primitive. In addition, the adult males ha
ve no glandular pouch, a rare condition in known male soft scales outside N
ew Zealand.
