M. Rischer et al., Quantitative determination of the iridoid glycosides aucubin and catalpol in Plantago lanceolata L. extracts by HPTLC and HPLC, J PL CHROM, 11(5), 1998, pp. 374-378
Extracts derived from the aerial parts of Plantago lanceolata L. (Plantagin
aceae) are used for the local treatment of inflammatory diseases of the ski
n. Among the complex mixture of biologically active compounds in the extrac
t, the iridoid glycosides aucubin and catalpol can be used as analytical ma
rkers to determine the quality of extracts from different sources. Quantita
tive analysis of aucubin and catalpol in the extracts, in lyophilizates of
the extracts, and in solutions of the extract (Systral(R) stick) was perfor
med by HPTLC. Results from HPTLC were compared with results from a modified
HPLC method reported in the literature.
