Abstract
This paper provides an introduction to the role of Formal Description Techniques in the development of an architectural semantics for Open D istributed Processing (ODP). Following a brief overview of ODP and the Reference Model for ODP, an outline of the reasons for developing an architectural semantics is given. The different approaches currently b eing taken for an ODP architectural semantics are presented. Finally, an ODP infrastructure component - the ODP Trader - is specified using the architectural semantics work, and the advantages gained from the a pproach are discussed.
