A novel approach to the design of visible range phase retardation devices i
s presented. These elements consist of a dielectric high reflection stack u
sed to realize reflectivity of nearly 100% and of a sub-wavelength grating
on top of the stack generating the required phase difference between the tw
o polarization states. Quarter-wave plate design is presented and fabricati
on and operation tolerances for this element considered. (C) 1998 Elsevier
