Abstract
We report new high-resolution photoabsorption measurements of the prin cipal and the intercombination series in neutral mercury by use of a 3 -m vacuum spectrograph equipped with a 6000-line/mm holographic gratin g and synchrotron radiation as the background source of the continuum. The perturbations observed in these Rydberg series are parameterized by a three-channel quantum-defect theory. An improved value of the fir st ionization potential is derived as 84 184.15 +/- 0.07 cm(-1). (C) 1 997 Optical Society of America.
